Band 7+: Nowadays some older people choose to live in retirement communities with other people, rather than living with their adult children. Is it a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Lately, there has been an ongoing debate about whether elderly people should live at home or in nursing homes. In my opinion, having the elderly live in nursing homes brings more benefits, which will be discussed in this essay.

On one hand, living in a nursing home can improve the mental health of elderly individuals. Since there are many people in nursing homes, they have the opportunity to interact and form friendships, making them less likely to feel lonely or depressed compared to staying at home. This helps them maintain good mental well-being. Additionally, elderly people who live alone tend to become withdrawn, find it difficult to start conversations, and feel isolated, which can lead to mental illnesses. A typical example is that elderly individuals may struggle to understand today’s social world, causing them to retreat into the past, where they feel more comfortable and in sync.

On the other hand, elderly people living in nursing homes are less dependent on their children. As they age, they receive care from nurses and caregivers, so their children generally only need to visit them on weekends, leaving them enough time to work or take care of their own families. In contrast, elderly people living alone may require daily attention, care, and supervision from their children, which could significantly disrupt their children’s lives.

In conclusion, while some people believe that the elderly are better off staying at home, I personally think that living in nursing homes is a great solution that helps them maintain their health and avoid being a burden on the next generations.
