Band 6+: One long-distance flight consumes fuel which a car uses in several years’ time, but they cause the same amount of pollution. So some people think that we should discourage non-essential flights, such as tourist travel, rather than to limit the use of cars. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There are ongoing debates regarding the amount of pollution caused by the fuel used in flights and cars. Some argue that unnecessary flights should not be encouraged, such as tourist visits, instead of the limitation of using cars. In this essay, I will discuss both points of view and present my perspective.

On the one hand, one of the primary reasons we should not discourage non-important flights is the massive contribution to the growth of the national economy. It means that by enhancing the air route, there will be more opportunities for local tourism development. One excellent example is the growth in sales of Vietnamese souvenirs, such as traditional garbs or cuisines, increasing locals’ income. Moreover, air highways can be essential for exchanging and trading products in some nations. Due to the fact that the geographical locations of some countries do not allow governments to build other means of transport, such as waterways or railways, airlines can be a viable solution. For instance, because Nepal is a landlocked country with rugged mountainous terrain, it does not have seaports and railways as it costs a huge amount of money and is very difficult to construct.

On the other hand, the number of private car users should be considered a rationale to limit the use of cars. While an airplane can carry more than 100 passengers per journey, a car can only deliver about 4-7 people, leading to a vast amount of fossil fuel emission from various cars daily, which can be more than by a flight. In addition, the dangers of cars can be another reason for the discouragement of using cars. Due to the massive number of car owners, there has been a significant increase in the number of injuries and fatalities caused by car accidents.

In conclusion, while non-important flights contribute to the growth of the domestic economy, it’s important to consider the environmental benefits of limiting car usage. By reducing the number of cars on the road, we can significantly decrease environmental pollution and the rate of accidents. In my view, instead of discouraging the development of air routes, we should focus on limiting car usage, as the environmental advantages of this approach far outweigh the benefits of non-important flights.

Some people are of the opinion that discouraging non-essential flights, instead of restricting the use of cars, is an essential measure, as both kinds of transport, with the same amount of fuel, could generate the equivalent level of pollution. Personally, I partly agree with this perspective, based on some rationales explained in this essay. On […]

There is a fact that the amount of fuel emissions one long-distance flight releases is equal to that of a car in many years. It is therefore suggested that the governments should implement a law reducing the use of unimportant flights instead of cars. While this thinking is valid to certain extent, I would like […]
