Some people argue about whether parents should spend more time with their children helping them with their homework, but I completely disagree. There are several reasons for my stance. Children need to learn how to be independent and develop their creative thinking skills.
When parents dedicate too much time and energy helping children with homework, it can have a negative impact in the long run. Children may not fully grasp the concepts because the responsibility lies with them to understand and learn. They may also become overly reliant on help, even for simple tasks, which can hinder their ability to develop self-sufficiency. This can lead to struggles later on when they have to study independently in high school or university.
Furthermore, constantly helping children with homework can discourage them from thinking critically and approaching problems in their own way. This can limit their intellectual growth and creativity, although subjects like art can provide an outlet for their imagination. Each school subject serves a different purpose in helping children learn and grow, and understanding a child’s strengths and weaknesses across subjects can help both the child and the parents identify areas of interest and potential.
Homework is meant to assess a child’s understanding of the material, and it should be the child’s own work, not the parents’. Therefore, parents spending excessive time on homework assistance may not be beneficial in the long term. It can hinder a child’s development by fostering dependency, laziness, and irresponsibility.
