The question of how to learn about other cultures is widely debated. Some people argue that gaining knowledge about other countries should be done through books and printed materials, not through videos. I strongly disagree with this view.
To begin with, videos are highly interactive, and people nowadays share short videos and reels through social media platforms. Many influencers use their pages to promote travel to unique destinations through short-form content, such as stories. This, in turn, may showcase the natural environment, the scenic landscape, and the historical landmarks, customs, and traditions of a country in one single video. As a result, avid followers can explore the world without leaving their homes. Additionally, reading may be less appealing to modern learners, as they regard reading as time-consuming and tedious. Consequently, using videos can be more engaging and accessible. Beyond social media, recently, AI tools have facilitated access to virtual reality experiences, such as the 360-degree tour, which can enable people to visualize the surroundings and landscape of any area. Therefore, the content of videos can succeed in attracting the attention of young people to learn about diverse cultural backgrounds.
Admittedly, critics of this view may argue that digitized content is unable to provide a holistic cultural and historical picture of any destination. However, this argument overlooks the fact that, beyond short videos, documentaries featuring professional historians can offer honest storytelling, detailed descriptions, and multiple views. For instance, documentaries produced by National Geographic provide complete episodes about unique spots in Africa, such as the Zulu tribes, featuring local customs, traditional clothing, wedding ceremonies, and food dishes. This way, many people can become more curious about exploring diverse cultures. Consequently, videos can provide a more realistic picture of the historical and cultural background of countries in an entertaining way, which may support cultural understanding and awareness.
In conclusion, I reiterate my opinion that videos can provide a highly immersive experience and a well-rounded perspective about other cultures and nations, overcoming the limitations of written materials.
