In the last few decades, there has been a noticeable increase in the amount of violence and crime taking place throughout the world. In most third-world countries and even first-world nations, the number of people charged with some crime is rising sharply. while some people believe that prison is the appropriate punishment for criminals, I mainly disagree with this idea, especially when individuals do not obey the regulations existing in society. In this essay, I will explain my point of view and state some points.
One of the reasons why I can’t entirely agree is the sentence period. In most countries, crimes such as robbery, kidnapping, and smuggling are the most important ones, for which there is no specific long jail time. For instance, in Italy, criminals charged with vandalism and theft, are released from prison after serving only one year in jail, resulting in them committing crimes again and again. There is no extended jail period to prevent offenders from offending, making them even more aggressive since there are no strict rules in Italian judicial systems.
Another point is because of the lack of enough witnesses. In most countries, if a person commits a crime, they are convicted of an offense and are sent to jail. Nonetheless, he or she pleads not guilty in the trial session, making the situation even tougher since people are afraid to be witnesses. As a result, criminals are acquitted of any involvement and are released just after being in jail for a short time.
I mostly believe that prison cannot be the best punishment due to the short serving period in jail and also the fears people face while asking for their witnesses in court.
