Band 8+: Public libraries provide a large collection of books to read. Some people argue that they should also provide other hi-tech facilities like computers, internet, CDs and Dvds. Do you agree or disagree with the statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Public libraries have traditionally been seen as a large-scale repository for physical books; however, it has been proposed that they should be modernized with technological innovations, such as computers, multimedia disks, and access to the internet. As far as I am concerned, it is fundamental that libraries incorporate recent advancements in technology to remain relevant, and this essay will elucidate the reasons for my stance.

The primary reason to introduce technology to physical libraries is that it can enrich the usefulness these facilities in the modern world. First and foremost, although libraries usually contain thousands of books, the internet allows readers to access millions of books instantaneously. Thus, aiming to avoid obsolescence, libraries are required to undergo transformation. For instance, by adding computer areas, users are empowered to find rare e-books that do not physically exist in the library. Furthermore, providing access to interactive multimedia devices such as CDs and DVDs can encourage interest library spaces. For example, studies have shown that young audiences are particularly interested in movies and audiobooks as learning material.

Another reason for enhancing libraries with modern equipment is that it can foster socioeconomic development. Many developing countries lack reliable internet infrastructure, as computers and smartphones are beyond the purchasing power of local people. To exemplify, 90% of Sub-Saharan African population did not have access to the internet at home, in 2020. Therefore, libraries with computers connected to the internet play a vital role in enabling poor citizens to access reading material, reducing the digital exclusion of peripheral populations. A pertinent example can be seen in Uganda, where libraries created by NGOs allow students of poor communities to study on the internet. Consequently, local schools reported significant improvement in the performance of these students.

In conclusion, it is crucial that libraries welcome technological advancements, incorporating computer facilities. The digital transition of libraries can enhance the social integration of younger generations, particularly in developing countries.
