Band 8+: Rich countries should allow jobs for skilled and knowledgeable employees who are from poor countries. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

I agree that rich countries should allow jobs for skilled workers from poor countries. This policy can bring many benefits for both the rich countries and the employees from poorer nations. However, it is also important to consider some problems that might happen.

For the developed countries, welcoming skilled foreign workers is a good solution to some problems. many rich nations, like Germany or Canada, have ageing populations and not enough young people to fill all the jobs, especially in important sectors like technology and healthcare. For example, hospitals in the UK often recruit doctors and nurses from countries like India or Philippines. This helps to keep their public health system running. These skilled immigrants also pay taxes and contribute to the economy, which is good for the host country.

For the individuals and their home countries, there are also advantages. Skilled professionals can earn much higher salaries in a developed country than they could at home. They often send a part of this money back to their families, which is called transferring. This money can help to reduce poverty in their home country. Furthermore, these workers can learn new skills and technologies while working abroad. If they decide to return home one day, they can use this knowledge to help develop their own country’s industries.

On the other hand, this is a serious problem of “brain drain”. This means that the poor country loses its best and most educated people, like doctors and engineers, who are needed for its own development. For instance, if a country in Africa invests in educating a doctor, but that doctor immediately moves to work in Europe, the home country loses its investment and its people lose a vital service. This can make the development gap between rich and poor countries even bigger.

In conclusion, while I agree that rich countries should offer jobs to skilled workers from poorer nations because it helps both sides, it is crucial to find a balance. Maybe rich countries can form partnerships with the source countries to provide training for other benefits to compensate for the loss of their skilled professionals. This way, it can be a better solution for everyone.
