Band 9: Schools should only offer subjects that are beneficial to students’ future career success. Other subjects, such as music and sports, are not important. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Educational institutions serve as foundational environments where children become acquainted with a multitude of subjects, thus fostering their overall development. Consequently, I firmly disagree with the notion that schools should exclusively offer subjects that are directly beneficial to future career success, while neglecting areas like music and sports.

Firstly, schools have a fundamental responsibility to expose children to a variety of career pathways available to them in the future. It is essential that students receive comprehensive instruction across all subjects during their formative years. This holistic approach not only cultivates an interest in diverse academic fields but also equips students with fundamental knowledge that is indispensable for their personal development. For instance, the current educational framework often encompasses a broad curriculum over a span of more than ten years, integrating foundational ethics and social norms. Additionally, it provides students with the opportunity to select their preferred subjects when they are sufficiently mature to consider their career aspirations in the later stages of their education.

Conversely, the significance of music and sports cannot be understated; they are as crucial to a child’s education as traditional academic subjects. Engaging in these activities fosters creativity and offers students a valuable outlet for relaxation, particularly after a demanding academic day. Furthermore, participation in sports and music contributes to a balanced lifestyle, highlighting the importance of extracurricular activities in nurturing well-rounded individuals. For example, many schools incorporate compulsory classes in sports and music for younger students, promoting physical wellness and preventing mental fatigue.

In conclusion, introducing a diverse array of subjects cultivates children’s intellectual and emotional growth, making it imperative for schools to offer a comprehensive curriculum. Thus, I assert that the inclusion of music and sports not only enhances students’ academic experiences but also strengthens their character, ultimately preparing them for a successful future.
