Band 7+: Science is more useful than human judgement in stopping crime. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Science has become an important tool in fighting crime, but some people argue that human judgment is still more valuable. While science provides useful and objective information, I believe human judgment plays a vital role in understanding the complexities of a crime. I partially agree with the idea that science is more useful, but I also think human judgment cannot be replaced.

On one hand, science provides accurate and reliable evidence in many criminal cases. For instance, DNA analysis is highly trusted because it can show who was at a crime scene, and it is almost 100 percent accurate. This makes it easier to identify criminals and prove their guilt. Additionally, scientific tools like fingerprint analysis, blood tests, and surveillance technology can provide solid evidence, making the investigation process more efficient. Science is also objective, meaning it does not have the emotional or biased influences that human judgment sometimes does.

However, human judgment is also important in stopping crime because science has limitations. Science cannot understand a person’s motives or interpret testimonies effectively. Detectives, for example, use their experience and common sense to determine if someone is lying or telling the truth. Moreover, scientific evidence can be manipulated or planted, such as when DNA is placed at a crime scene to frame someone. In such cases, human judgment is necessary to interpret the evidence correctly and avoid punishing innocent people.

In conclusion, while science plays a crucial role in fighting crime by providing objective and accurate evidence, it cannot replace human judgment. Science cannot fully understand human behavior, emotions, or motives, which are often key to solving crimes. Therefore, both science and human judgment are needed to effectively stop crime and ensure justice.
