Band 8+: Smacking children is the best form to discipline them "

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The use of physical punishment has been a contentious topic in recent years. Some people argue that the best way to instill discipline in children is through physical discipline. This essay will discuss why adults, in their role as parents, should refrain from hitting their children as a means of enforcing discipline.

Many parents believe that inflicting pain on their young ones is an effective way to raise them to be good individuals. Some parents may recognize their authority over small children, which leads them to strike their child for every mistake. This approach fosters fear in the child, making them terrified to try new things. These parents often argue that parenting is the hardest job in the world and that caring for a baby is exhausting. Additionally, because some children are not always compliant, they may be hit when they misbehave, leaving them in tears yet surprisingly quiet. At times, parents struggle with controlling their negative emotions or harsh words, which means that children’s well-being becomes dependent on their parents’ fluctuating moods, creating an unhealthy atmosphere at home.

Despite parents’ intentions, the notion that physical punishment positively impacts a child’s behavior is flawed. Research conducted by Harvard University in 2023 reveals that teenagers who were beaten during their childhood often maintain poor relationships with their parents, even years later. Ultimately, the idea that hitting a child is a viable method for parenting poses significant risks for the child’s future. Nearly every child subjected to such treatment becomes anxious due to their parents’ inability to manage their emotions effectively.

This essay has presented the main arguments against using physical punishment on children and outlined several reasons why it can be detrimental to a child’s development. In my view, resorting to physical discipline is entirely inappropriate in today’s society. Those individuals who struggle to discuss a child’s mistakes using peaceful and comprehensible language must recognize that children are still learning and are not yet equipped to manage the complexities of adult behavior, unlike their parents, who have already navigated their own childhood experiences.
