The ubiquity of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram has transformed the way individuals communicate with each other, replacing face-to-face interaction in their daily life. While this trend brings some drawbacks, I am convinced that the advantages are far more than the disadvantages.
To commence with downsides, social media platforms can have negative impacts on mental health. In other words, use of social media can lead to increased anxiety, stress, depression, or loneliness. For instance, when comparing their lives with perfect image posted on Instagram, individuals may feel inadequate, impairing their self-esteem and resulting in depression. Individuals’ productivity, moreover, could be reduced as they spending long hours on these platforms. To put it differently, excessive use of social media can cause addiction, decreased attention span, and ultimately lower efficiency in daily routine life. For example, when checking Instagram, I lose track of time, leading to neglection of my lessons, diminishing my productivity and taking me one step away from my goals.
Having said that, as well as negatives, this trend is bring more benefits. The first benefit is concerned with its accessibility, enabling individuals to communicate anytime and any where as long as they have internet connection. Take a student living in the dormitory for example; they can stay can stay in touch with their parents through platforms, such as Imo and Google Meat without considering geographical distance. In addition, this trend provides individuals with greater opportunity to enhance their connectivity and get familiar with diverse cultures and beliefs. Consider Hello Talk as an axiomatic example; It paves the way for individuals to make international friends and expand their social networks. Allowing to share information is also another advantage of this development. Indeed, through these platforms individuals can share and access to various information, such as new articles, photos, and personal experience. Twitter is an obvious example, where people can share their ideas and their special moments or access to latest global news and trends.
To sum up, while using social media has some negatives, such as reduced mental well-being and efficiency, I believe that this trend offers more benefits, including availability, increased international interaction, and the ability to share information.
