Band 7+: Some believe instead of trying to fight climate change, we should learn to live with it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is a commonly held view that rather than combating climate change, we should adapt to it. I firmly oppose this perspective as climate change poses numerous serious threats to human civilization, and it is our duty to address it due to our significant contribution to extreme weather events.

Undeniably, climate change can have far-reaching impacts, negatively affecting our existence. The phenomenon of global warming, for example, leads to the melting of Antarctic glaciers, housing a multitude of previously unidentified pathogens. This could potentially unleash incurable diseases that may spread worldwide, affecting individuals without immunity to such illnesses. Moreover, glacier melting results in rising sea levels, which can devastate coastal ecosystems. For instance, it may cause destructive erosion, flooding, and contamination of aquifers and agricultural lands with salt, thereby diminishing the quality of life for coastal residents. Therefore, measures should be taken to mitigate climate change and minimize its adverse consequences.

Not only does the deterrent of climate change have practical implications for the survival of human societies, but it is also a moral obligation, given that our actions are significant contributors to the problem. Agricultural activities, for instance, generate carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases through processes like deforestation, land clearance for farming, fertilizer usage, and reliance on fossil fuels for agricultural operations. These aspects underscore the pivotal role of agriculture in driving climate change, underscoring our responsibility to tackle this issue.

In conclusion, mitigating extreme weather events can improve human well-being, underscoring the imperative to combat climate change and its detrimental effects. Additionally, taking action against climate change is ethical as we are primarily responsible for its genesis through our activities.
