Band 8+: Some believe museums should entertain people, while others believe its purpose is to educate. Discuss both views and give your own opinion

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Museums are said to be rich hubs of a place’s cultural past, along with its future, which is enclosed within creative presentations. While some are appealed by their entertainment qualities, others value their knowledge dissemination more. Both points of view are reasonable, given the nature of museums and can thus be analyzed before affirming a final take.

It is possible that viewing cultural artifacts of the past as well as modern art can be termed an entertaining activity. For example, Van Gogh’s 360-degree experience museums are a novel take on providing their viewers with deep immersive experiences. A dark environment, with highlighted art that captures an audience’s attention, clearly counts as engaging entertainment that a museum provides. Therefore, museums can offer enriching experiences for people to enjoy.

On the other hand, museums are traditionally seen as places that can create more awareness and knowledge among the general public or tourists. For example, Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum suggests that its visitors purchase an audio guide to combine their viewing experience with the opportunity to learn more about the artist’s history and life experiences. Viewers are thus expected to not just appreciate the art but also learn more about the artist and their artistic style. Hence, education can be situated at the core of the viewing experience in museums.

In summary, museums have the potential to provide entertainment as well as education through their setup. However, after analyzing the two sides of the argument, it is clear that educational learning forms the crux of any museum experience. Hence, when interacting with artistic legacies in museums, while visual aesthetics play a huge role in attracting viewers’ attention, the story behind the visual is often the message an artist or curator wishes to convey.
