Band 9: Some believe secondary students should learn International news as a subject at school, while others think it's a waste of time. Discuss both views and give your opinion

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In an increasingly globalized world, there is debate over whether international news should be taught as a subject in secondary schools. Some argue that it is essential for students to stay informed about global affairs, while others believe it distracts from core academic subjects and offers little practical value. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own view.

Proponents of teaching international news in schools believe it helps students become more informed and responsible global citizens. Understanding current events around the world fosters awareness of important issues such as climate change, conflict, human rights, and economic trends. This knowledge can broaden students’ perspectives and improve their critical thinking skills. For example, by learning about international conflicts or global health crises, students are better equipped to understand the interconnectedness of countries and the challenges facing humanity. Moreover, staying updated on world affairs may inspire some students to pursue careers in international relations, journalism, or global development.

On the other hand, some people argue that teaching international news in school is unnecessary and may be a distraction from core subjects like mathematics, science, or literacy. They believe that secondary students should focus on foundational knowledge and skills that are more directly tied to exams and future job opportunities. Additionally, critics worry that news coverage can sometimes be biased, too complex, or even distressing for younger audiences, which could lead to confusion or anxiety. From this point of view, it is better for students to engage with current events outside the classroom at their own pace and maturity level.

While there are valid concerns about overloading the school curriculum or exposing students to difficult topics too early, I believe that teaching international news can be extremely beneficial when done appropriately. Rather than treating it as a full subject, integrating global news into existing subjects like social studies or language classes could strike a balance. In this way, students can develop global awareness without sacrificing essential academic content. Overall, international news education plays a valuable role in preparing students for the complexities of the modern world.
