Some people think group projects in college are helpful because they teach students to work. Others believe individual assignments are better for making students independent. This essay will talk about both sides before I share my opinion.
On the one hand group projects are really good for helping students work with others. In jobs people have to work with colleagues from different backgrounds and areas of expertise. Group assignments let students practice talking, leading, solving problems and resolving conflicts. For example when working on a presentation or research project students have to divide tasks share ideas and work together to achieve a goal. As a result they become better prepared for the demands of the workplace and learn to work in a team.
On the hand doing work on your own helps students become self-reliant and responsible for their own learning. When completing assignments by themselves students have to manage their time conduct research on their own and solve problems without relying on others. This process helps them develop confidence and critical thinking abilities. Furthermore individual assessments provide an accurate measure of a students knowledge and effort whereas group projects sometimes allow weaker members to depend on stronger teammates leading to an unfair distribution of work.
In my opinion both forms of assessment are valuable. Group projects offer greater long-term benefits. While independence is undoubtedly important teamwork is a skill in todays interconnected world. Employers are looking for individuals who can collaborate effectively with others and group projects provide an opportunity to develop this ability. Nevertheless colleges should maintain a balance between group and individual assignments to ensure students acquire both teamwork and independence skills through group projects and individual work.
In conclusion group projects help students build collaboration and communication skills through teamwork whereas individual work promotes self-reliance and personal accountability. Although both approaches have their advantages I believe group projects are more beneficial because they prepare students, for real-world professional situations and help them learn to work in a team.
