It is partially argued, most information produced by the media is inevitably biased. I believe that the main cause of this problem is the inherent political interest of media companies. It is also argued in this essay that the effective way to cope with the issue is to ask the active role of the press council.
What is at stake of media independence is its incapability to spread impartial news owing to the media’s political interest. Arguing from the critical perspective, information which is produced by some media company cannot be seen as neutral because they inherently have had certain political standpoints. In this case, news is usually framed to shape the public opinion for the favored of political cliques. In general elections, for instance, different media mostly publish different views on political parties or politicians. This bias might be as a result of tightly political linkage between media and some prominent politicians who own the party and media as well.
To cope with this entrenched problem, asking for neutrality of journalistic publication needs a strong commitment of pers council to supervise media’s content. This board must impose strict regulation so as to control the substance of news. This has to be drawn on pers stances in keeping a good quality journalism. For example, the council should have an annual supervision to investigate the extent to which media companies apply the cover both sides principle in their news production. Additionally, another way to keep distorted information at bay is by giving awards to the media as a symbol of appreciation to those who can publish impartial news for the public.
In conclusion, the pervasive bad quality of the media’s information is mostly resulted from political interest embedded within the media company. As such, we need an annual supervision to ensure good contents based on good journalistic principles.
