The preference of individuals in goods or services is affected by various factors such as tastes, color, or even environment. However, while most people tend to go for imported products, some consumers are increasingly patronizing home made goods and services, and in my opinion, this is a positive trend.
Choosing to buy locally made products has a whole lot of advantages, especially for the local economy. One of such merits includes employment opportunities for the indigent population. As these home grown companies make sales through increased patronage, they expand, leading to more vacancies being available to be filled by unemployed individuals. For example, a local textile industry in Benin, that started business with less than fifty staff in 2022, now has under its employ over one hundred and seventy workers in 2026.
In addition, it gives room for these local enterprises to improve their products. For instance, as these companies make sales, they also get feedback or complaints from consumers on how to improve their goods and promote excellent service delivery.
Although customers who patronize foreign products have their own reasons, which includes but is not limited to durability. Most imported materials, especially machines, have proved to be more durable than locally manufactured ones because they are usually made of high quality metal like steel alloy instead of just iron, but this is something indigenous industries can emulate when given proper support.
In conclusion, while every consumer has the right to opt for any type of product they wish, be it local or imported, the increasing patronage of home made items is a positive trend and should be sustained.
