Band 7+: Some countries are experiencing a decline in traditional arts and crafts due to the popularity of mass-produced goods. Do the advantages of mass production outweigh the disadvantages of losing traditional skills and products?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The question of whether the decline of traditional arts and crafts is a cause for concern or a natural consequence of progress has sparked considerable debate. This essay will demonstrate how mass-produced goods can transform the economy of poor areas but will also show that the country’s culture will lose its uniqueness. Whilst acknowledging that there are drawbacks, the essay will argue that the advantages of the commercial goods outweigh the disadvantages.

On the one hand, one country that has experienced a significant economic boost from commercial goods is China. Over the past 40 years, many of its rural agricultural regions, where inhabitants once relied on subsistence farming, have been transformed into global manufacturing hubs. With all the factories, supply chains, logistics centers and supporting infrastructure that have been developed, there are now stable employment opportunities for millions and the general standard of living has greatly increased. Many local workers have gained valuable technical skills and moved into higher-paying positions, which has further diversified the economy.

On the other hand, In South Korea the dominance of mass-produced K-pop merchandise and globalized fashion trends has had a negative impact on traditional cultural heritage. The overwhelming demand for modern commercial goods, from idol-branded items to fast fashion, has forced many traditional hanbok makers and master craftsmen to close their workshops. Not only have these skilled artisans lost their ability to pass down centuries-old techniques but the situation has also resulted in a lost sense of cultural identity, with younger generations increasingly disconnected from their unique heritage in the worst affected rural communities.

In conlusion, although the spread of mass-produced goods can sometimes lead to the decline of traditional crafts and local artisans losing their livelihoods, it greatly improves the affordability and accessibility of products for most people as well as contributing significantly to economic development. Hence, the positive effects of industrial manufacturing definitely outweigh the drawbacks.
