Band 7+: Some experts say that for road safety, cyclists should pass a test before going on public roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, more and more people are concerned about the safety of people who ride a bike. Some individuals contend that it is better for them to have a bicycle license before taking part in traffic. From my point of view, while I agree that this approach is effective, it should work in tandem with other remedies.

Many experts believe that an examination for cyclists is essential. The key rationale is that testing is required to guarantee that people participating in traffic fully comprehend the law about traffic. This might lead to the raising of awareness when they are on the road, avoiding making any mistakes. Take Vietnam, the capital of Vietnam, as an example. In 2021, the percentage of cycling accidents decreased dramatically by 40% after adopting the traffic education and organizing competitions on road safety for children and adults. Thanks to this method, there would be a remarkable decline in cycling-related accidents.

Despite the aforementioned impact of taking a test for people who ride a bike before going on public roads, other solutions should be implemented simultaneously. First and foremost, the government might need to require all citizens (not only cyclists but also individuals who drive other means of transport) to obey traffic rules strictly by imposing heavier penalties, such as larger fines or license suspension. Moreover, the authorities should put a high priority on infrastructure. For example, they could separate lanes for bicycles as well as install smart traffic lights to reduce collisions.

In conclusion, while requiring a test for road safety is necessary for people to understand the traffic laws, I believe that it should be combined with other solutions, including imposing heavier penalties and focusing on infrastructure. Hopefully, owing to those measures, individuals would behave more responsibly on the roads.
