Some people argue that the authorities must prioritise their citizens’ needs, while others claim that international matters hold more importance. Despite the need for collaborative efforts between countries to overcome global problems, governments should ensure that their people are satisfied and their basic life needs are met. It is, therefore, argued that domestic matters are far more important.
On the one hand, those who claim the importance of national matters believe that it is essential to ensure people’s satisfaction. Education, health, and employment opportunities are basic life requirements that the authorities should ensure all people have access to in order to lead a desired quality of life. For instance, poor countries should focus more on solving their internal problems before offering help to others. Moreover, a satisfied population is more productive. When people’s needs are met, they are likely to work better and be productive, which can lead to the overall development of a country.
On the other hand, opponents who claim global problems should be given a priority have the perspective that international issues such as climate change and pandemics require collaboration to mitigate them. The COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, has shown how the shared work of early reporting of cases globally helps to decrease the global spread of the disease.
Although global problems indeed require international collaboration to face them, meeting the country’s local needs should be the priority of the governments. This ensures the population’s satisfaction, consequently leading to the development of the country. It is, therefore, claimed that governments should allocate their resources towards domestic matters.
