Success is often seen as the result of different factors, and there is an ongoing debate about whether hard work or luck plays a more significant role. While some people argue that consistent effort is the key to success, others believe that chance and external circumstances are more decisive. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own view.
On the one hand, hard work is widely regarded as the main driver of success. People who are disciplined, persistent and willing to invest time in developing their skills are more likely to achieve their goals. For example, students who study regularly and practice consistently usually perform better in exams than those who rely on last-minute preparation. In addition, hard work allows individuals to improve over time, increasing their chances of success regardless of their initial abilities.
On the other hand, luck can also play a crucial role in determining life outcomes. Being born into a wealthy family, meeting the right people at the right time, or encountering unexpected opportunities can significantly influence a person’s success. For instance, many successful entrepreneurs admit that luck, such as entering a growing market at the perfect moment, contributed to their achievements. Without such favourable circumstances, even hard-working individuals may struggle to succeed.
In my opinion, although luck can provide important opportunities, hard work is ultimately more important. Luck may open a door, but it is sustained effort that allows a person to take advantage of that opportunity and maintain success in the long term. Therefore, success is best seen as a combination of both factors, with hard work playing the dominant role.
