Band 8+: Some people beileve that young people should be punished the same way as adutls. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is an ongoing debate about whether young people who commit serious offences should receive the same punishments as adults. While I accept that treating juvenile offenders more strictly may be necessary in certain cases, I believe that identical sentencing is not always appropriate.

On the one hand, there are valid reasons why some people argue for adult-level punishment for young criminals. To begin with, excessively lenient sentences may fail to act as an effective deterrent. If teenagers know that they will receive lighter penalties regardless of the severity of their crimes, they may be more likely to reoffend later in life. Moreover, criminal organisations might take advantage of this legal gap by persuading naïve young people to commit violent or organised crimes on their behalf. Imposing harsher penalties for serious juvenile offences could therefore help prevent youths from being manipulated or drawn into criminal networks.

On the other hand, punishing minors exactly like adults can be counterproductive. Children and adolescents often lack the emotional maturity and cognitive development to fully understand the long-term consequences of their actions. Their behaviour is more likely to be impulsive rather than intentionally malicious. Treating them as adults may ignore their potential for rehabilitation, especially when early intervention could help them return to a positive path. Additionally, placing young offenders in adult prisons exposes them to hardened criminals and increases the risk of turning them into repeat offenders. A justice system that prioritises rehabilitation – through counselling, education, and separate juvenile detention facilities – can be far more effective in reducing reoffending rates.

In conclusion, although harsher punishment may sometimes be necessary to deter serious youth crimes, I do not believe that young offenders should always be treated the same as adults. A balanced system that combines appropriate penalties with rehabilitation is likely to produce the best outcomes for both individuals and society.
