There is a growing debate among the public regarding community service at the school level where one group of people says it should be optional, while others believe it should be mandatory. In my opinion, the latter is true because social service helps develop few skillsets and core value for becoming a good social being.
According to a few, serving the society should purely be an individual’s personal choice. It should not be something that is forced in schools. They defend their view by arguing that school should only focus on academics and the other aspects like social service should be left to the kid’s parents. For example, A good school teaches their students to get better ranks assist in their intellectual development.
On the other hand, a set of individuals feel communicy service should be a part of school’s curriculum. This is because, serving the community by volunteering to work for an old-age home or by keeping the nearby gardens and parks clean and any other form of social service fosters a sense of responsibility in minds of children. In addition to that, it also develops certain key social skills and values that are essential for becoming good citizens of the society. For example, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a renowned scientist and former president of India once recalled in an interview that how community service at an orphanage during school days gave him the inspiration to serve his people and his country.
In conclusion, despite some people’s view that social service should entirely be one’s own choice, in my opinion, schools should make community services compulsory for all pupils as it instills much needed moral values and ethics along with formal academic knowledge that plays a vital role in children become productive citizens of the society.
