Band 8+: Some people believe that children should be banned from using their phones during the school day. Others believe that children should be allowed to use their phones. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Digital devices, such as mobile phones, in classrooms, have become a controversial issue in the modern world. Some argue that students should be allowed because they browse additional learning materials, while others contend that phones are a source of distraction and disruption. This essay will examine both sides of this debate and present my opinion.

On the one hand, there are some advantages to allowing students to use their phones in class. Firstly, phones can enable students to access the internet and find more details about the topics they are studying, which can help them understand the teacher’s explanations. For example, if the students are learning about human anatomy, they can use their phones to search for images or videos of the body parts and organs they are studying. Secondly, phones can facilitate communication and collaboration among students and teachers, engagement and motivation. For instance, students can use their phones to ask questions or give feedback to the teacher.

On the other hand, there are also some drawbacks to using phones in class. Firstly, phones can be a major distraction for students, who may be tempted to use them for entertainment or social purposes instead of focusing on the lesson. For example, students may play games, watch videos, or chat with their friends on their phones, which can reduce their attention span and memory retention. Secondly, phones can also cause disruption and noise in the classroom, which can affect the learning environment and the quality of teaching. For example, phones may interrupt the teacher’s speech or the students’ concentration.

In conclusion, both sides of the debate have valid points and evidence. However, after analysing both sides, I believe the disadvantages of using phones in class outweigh the advantages. Therefore, I agree that phones should be banned or limited in schools and that schools should implement new rules and policies to enforce this. Due to this, students can focus more on their studies and achieve better results.
