Band 9: Some people believe that children should be banned from using their phones during the school day. Others believe that children should be allowed to use their phones. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some individuals support the idea of allowing students to use mobile phones during school hours because they can access additional learning resources, while others argue that phones should be banned due to the distractions they cause. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, banning phones in schools is often justified by concerns over distraction and misuse. Electronic devices provide easy access to social media, games, and entertainment, which can significantly reduce students’ ability to focus during lessons. As a result, academic performance may suffer, and students could struggle to complete homework or assignments effectively. Furthermore, excessive screen time during school hours can hinder face-to-face interaction among peers, negatively impacting the development of social skills. For instance, many schools in Thailand enforce strict policies prohibiting the use of personal devices during class but offer extracurricular clubs to encourage real-world socialization among students.

On the other hand, when used appropriately, mobile phones can greatly enhance the educational experience. Smartphones provide instant access to a wide range of learning tools, research materials, and educational applications. For example, in language classes, students can use translation apps to expand their vocabulary or clarify difficult concepts in real-time. Additionally, some learning platforms offer interactive quizzes and tutorials that cater to different learning styles, making education more accessible and engaging for all students.

In my view, a balanced approach would be the most effective solution. Schools should implement clear guidelines that allow the use of phones strictly for educational purposes while limiting recreational use during school hours. This would enable students to benefit from technological advancements without compromising their focus or interpersonal development.

In conclusion, while mobile phones can certainly serve as a distraction, they also offer tremendous educational opportunities when used correctly. Therefore, with proper regulations in place, the advantages of allowing limited phone use in schools can outweigh the potential drawbacks.
