Band 7+: Some people believe that children that commit crimes should be punished. Others think the parents should be punished instead. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The issue of whether children who commit crimes should be penalized themselves or if their parents should bear the legal repercussions is a topic of debate in society. While some advocate for holding the children accountable for their actions, others contend that the responsibility should lie with the parents. In my perspective, parents should not be held accountable for the wrongdoing of their children as they have not committed the offense themselves and hence should not be deemed responsible.

Proponents of the view that parents should be punished argue that children’s behaviors are often learned from their parents due to their impressionable nature. For instance, children raised in environments where violence is prevalent may be more predisposed to engage in criminal activities later in life. Research has demonstrated that individuals who have experienced abuse during childhood are more prone to developing psychological issues. This suggests that parents, by shaping their children’s cognitive development, indirectly influence their behavior, and therefore some believe that parents should bear the consequences of their children’s actions.

Conversely, attributing the blame to parents implies that the child lacks free will in making choices. While parental upbringing can influence behavior to some extent, it is essential to acknowledge that individuals also possess a level of autonomy, which varies based on their age and cognitive development. Furthermore, penalizing parents for the crimes committed by their children would unjustly hold them accountable for actions they did not personally commit. It is conceivable that a child raised in a nurturing environment may still choose to engage in criminal behavior, independent of their upbringing. Thus, without definitive proof that a child’s criminal conduct is solely a result of parental influence rather than individual choice, it is unfair to punish the parents.

In conclusion, I contend that even as children grow older and gain increasing autonomy, parents should not be subjected to legal penalties for the actions of their delinquent children. While parents undoubtedly play a role in shaping their children’s values and behaviors, it is crucial to recognize that individuals, including minors, have the capacity to make their own decisions. Therefore, unless there is concrete evidence to establish a direct link between a child’s criminal acts and parental influence, holding parents accountable is unwarranted.
