Band 8+: some people believe that cities should be designed for cars, while others argue that cities should be designed for people. Discuss both views and give your own opinion."

The design of cities has been a topic of debate among urban planners and policymakers. While some argue that cities should prioritize car infrastructure, others believe that cities should be designed with people in mind. In this essay, I will discuss both views and provide my opinion.

On the one hand, designing cities for cars has its advantages. For instance, wide roads and highways can reduce traffic congestion and make commuting faster and more efficient. Additionally, ample parking spaces can encourage people to visit city centers, boosting local businesses and economic growth. Cities like Los Angeles and Houston have successfully implemented car-friendly designs, resulting in reduced traffic congestion and increased economic activity.

On the other hand, prioritizing people-centric designs has numerous benefits. Pedestrian-friendly cities with ample public spaces, bike lanes, and walkable neighborhoods can promote physical activity, social interaction, and community engagement. Moreover, people-centric designs can reduce air pollution, noise pollution, and urban heat island effects, creating a healthier and more sustainable environment. Cities like Copenhagen and Vancouver have successfully implemented people-centric designs, resulting in improved quality of life and reduced environmental impact.

In my opinion, cities should prioritize people-centric designs. While car-friendly designs may provide short-term benefits, they often lead to long-term problems like urban sprawl, traffic congestion, and environmental degradation. People-centric designs, on the other hand, promote sustainable, equitable, and healthy urban environments that benefit both residents and visitors.

In conclusion, both car-friendly and people-centric designs have their advantages and disadvantages. However, prioritizing people-centric designs can create more sustainable, equitable, and healthy cities that benefit everyone.
