Band 8+: Some people believe that feminism has already achieved its goals, while others think women still face discrimination in many parts of the world. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s digital world, social media often portrays feminism as merely a financial issue, focusing on questions such as who should pay for the first date or whether couples should split the bill. However, this narrow perspective overlooks the true purpose of feminism. Feminism is not only about financial equality; it is fundamentally about ensuring that women everywhere have the same basic rights, opportunities, and freedoms as men. While women in many developed countries have made significant progress, millions of women around the world are still denied their most fundamental human rights.

On the one hand, many people believe that feminism has already achieved its goals, particularly in developed countries. In regions such as the European Union, women are legally protected and have the right to vote, pursue higher education, work in almost any profession, own property, and make their own financial decisions. Compared with the past, when women were expected to stay at home, raise children, and even required their husbands’ permission to open a bank account, these achievements represent remarkable progress. As a result, some people argue that feminism is no longer as necessary as it once was.

However, I strongly disagree with this view because these rights are still far from universal. As the saying goes, “No woman is free until all women are free.” In many African countries, human trafficking remains a serious issue that deserves far greater international attention. Thousands of women and young girls are trafficked, sold into brothels, and forced into prostitution. Many suffer physical and sexual abuse every day while having little or no legal protection. Likewise, in Afghanistan, women have been stripped of many of their fundamental rights. They have been banned from pursuing higher education, face severe restrictions on their freedom of movement, and are often unable to leave their homes without a male guardian. These examples clearly demonstrate that gender equality is still a distant goal in many parts of the world.

Furthermore, discrimination against women continues to exist even in developed societies. Despite significant progress, many women still face barriers in the workplace. Gender pay gaps remain a reality in numerous industries, where women may earn less than men despite performing work of equal value. In addition, women are often underrepresented in senior leadership positions and continue to encounter stereotypes that question their competence or ambition. These issues show that legal equality alone does not always guarantee true equality in practice.

In conclusion, women’s rights are human rights. The fact that some women enjoy freedom today does not guarantee that those rights will always be protected, nor does it erase the struggles faced by millions of women elsewhere. The only difference between many of those women and us is where we were born. Therefore, those who have the privilege of living in free societies should use their voices to raise awareness, support gender equality, and advocate for women whose voices are too often silenced. Only when every woman is free can we truly say that feminism has achieved its purpose.
