Band 8+: Some people believe that government should spend money on building train and subway line to reduce traffic congestion. Others think that building more and wider roads is a better way to reduce traffic congestion. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

While some people advocate for increased investment in public transportation systems like trains and subways, others believe that expanding roads is a more effective approach. Although road expansion provides certain benefits, it is not a sustainable solution to alleviate traffic jams in the long run.

Investing in public transportation is widely regarded as an effective method to tackle traffic problems. One of the primary reasons for this is the overreliance on private vehicles, which contributes significantly to congestion. For instance, the long lines of cars during rush hours result in not only delays but also an increased likelihood of traffic accidents. Public transportation systems such as subways and trains offer an alternative by utilizing underground spaces, effectively reducing the volume of vehicles on the roads and mitigating congestion. Additionally, these systems are more environmentally friendly and can accommodate a larger number of commuters, making them a sustainable option.

On the other hand, some argue that road expansion is a more feasible and cost-effective solution. Expanding roads requires less effort compared to constructing underground transportation systems and involves relatively lower costs. Proponents of this approach believe that wider roads provide more space for vehicles, improving traffic flow during peak hours. However, while this may offer temporary relief, the additional capacity often encourages more people to use their private vehicles, which can ultimately lead to recurring congestion.

In conclusion public transportation systems, although requiring significant investment, offer a more sustainable and efficient way to address this issue. Therefore, governments should prioritize the development of public transport infrastructure alongside other innovative solutions to ensure safer and more reliable transportation.
