Nowadays, freedom of speech has become a controversial topic in our society. While some people argue that everyone should have the right to speak, others, however, believe that censorship should be implemented on free speech. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives in detail before presenting my personal opinion in the conclusion.
On the one hand, it is necessary that freedom of speech be considered important in the current scenario. This is because every individual has the right to speak against evil and injustice. Moreover, democratic rights allow people to express their thoughts, ideas, and emotions without fear. For instance, in the past, discussions on topics such as sex education and gender equality were considered taboo. However, the scenario has now changed, and people can raise awareness on various platforms, such as social media and debates. Additionally, several awareness movements have already started their campaigns to promote discussion on these sensitive issues.
On the other hand, many people believe that censorship plays a crucial role in preventing the promotion of false agendas on public platforms. For example, some influencers and high-authority officials misuse unrestricted speech, which can lead to racism, political hatred, and violence. Furthermore, explicit, violent, or offensive content should be banned, especially to protect children from negative influences. To illustrate, most children today are influenced by social media, increasing the possibility of their engagement in unlawful activities. Therefore, censorship can help prevent misinformation, hate speech, and harmful content while ensuring a safer environment for individuals and society.
In conclusion, this essay discussed the reasons why freedom of speech is essential, as well as the importance of censorship in certain cases. In my opinion, the right to freedom of speech should be protected, but with necessary restrictions to prevent harm and maintain social harmony.
