There are different opinions about time of learning new languages; some people prefer wants to acquire a language at very early age, while others prefer to learn later. In my view, language classes should be studied in school and in this essay, I will discuss why it is important to start learning from childhood.
On the one hand, children’s brain is more open to learning new things at a faster pace, especially languages, because individuals’ brains are very flexible and responsive, which it is allowed to understand and learn new linguistic patterns, vocabulary and grammar compared to adults without effort and difficulties. Furthermore, children have more free time, they can fill this gap by learning a language, which is difficult to create even now, due to university or work life. For example, in Azerbaijan, English language courses are introduced from the 1st grade. This early start gives children the advantage of absorbing the language naturally, much like their mother tongue.
On the other hand, learning a language early on can have cognitive benefits beyond just linguistic proficiency. children who learn a second language from a young age tend to have better problem-solving skills, enhanced creativity, and improved memory. Consequently, children who start language learning early are often better equipped not only in language skills but also in other academic areas. For example, a study conducted by the University of Edinburgh found that children who began learning a second language before the age of seven demonstrated significantly higher scores in cognitive tests compared to their monolingual peers.
In conclusion, although, there are differing opinions on the ideal time to begin language learning, it is clear that starting at a young age has significant advantages.
