Band 8+: Some people believe that students should study the subjects they are interested in, while others think they should study subjects that will be useful in the future. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that students should focus on learning subjects that are of great interest to them. In contrast, others disagree, suggesting that teaching subjects essential for one’s future holds more importance. This essay agrees with the former argument and will discuss how learning subjects that students enjoy can fuel motivation and increase overall performance, while building a strong foundation in other core subjects can provide a significant impact on future careers.

When students dedicate their time to an area of study that they are passionate about, they are more likely to exert greater effort and achieve better results in that area. It is evident that passion is one of the primary drivers of curiosity in an individual, encouraging engagement and motivation towards the subject they are working on. As one devotes immense time and effort into certain subjects, they will acquire a deeper understanding and develop specific skills that could better guide them in their future career. A prime example is China, where a majority of middle and high schools allow their students to start choosing subjects related to the major that they intend to pursue. Consequently, China has undergone a remarkable transformation, achieving substantial progress in different fields, including entertainment and technology.

On the other hand, subjects deemed important could also be crucial in building one’s general knowledge and improving one’s future living quality. Skills such as mathematics and language proficiency have proven to be highly valuable in both future endeavors and in daily life. However, I will have to disagree with this standing as these basic skills could be easily mastered outside one’s academic life. For instance, language fluency can be improved by exposing oneself to forms of entertainment in that language, such as TV shows and podcasts.

In conclusion, while essential subjects like math and language play an important role in daily life, allowing students to focus on subjects they are genuinely passionate about fosters motivation, deeper learning, and better performance. Therefore, education systems should encourage students to pursue their interests, as this approach can ultimately lead to greater personal and professional success.
