Some believe that the Olympic games help bring people from different nations together, while others claim that holding the Olympics wastes money which could be used for important issues. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

The Olympic Games are a globally celebrated event that brings together athletes and spectators from all over the world. While some believe the Olympics encourage unity and cultural exchange, others argue that they are an unnecessary expense that diverts resources from more urgent global needs.

On one side, the Olympics are seen as a way to foster international harmony by uniting nations through a shared love for sports. Athletes from different cultures compete alongside one another, often forming connections that go beyond political or national divides. The Games also create a sense of global togetherness among audiences and help break down cultural stereotypes. Moreover, hosting the Olympics can boost national pride and stimulate economic growth. For example, the 1992 Barcelona Olympics revitalized the city, improving infrastructure and turning it into a top tourist destination.

Conversely, critics argue that the Olympics are a heavy financial burden for host nations. Countries often spend vast amounts on infrastructure, much of which becomes unused after the event, as seen with the Athens 2004 Games. These funds, critics claim, could be better spent on pressing issues like poverty, healthcare, or education. Additionally, the Olympics have been criticized for displacing local communities and prioritizing profit and spectacle over social welfare, as was evident in Rio 2016.

In my opinion, while the Olympics bring nations together, their financial and social challenges must be addressed. By focusing on sustainability and reusing existing infrastructure, the Games can inspire unity while reducing their negative impacts, ensuring they remain beneficial to all.
