Band 7+: Some people believe that the public transportation should be free

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is true that public transport charges a small amount of money. While some people tend towards the viewpoint that it should be free of charge, I would have to support the idea that it should remain unchanged: fees must be required from people who use it.

On the one hand, there are clear arguments that support the idea of making public transport free. One of the main reasons is that people can save a certain amount of their money from being spent on public transport. This means that they can accumulate that money for their other expenses, such as clothing, food, and other necessities. For example, in my country, Uzbekistan, people allocate approximately $50, which some people earn in a month, for using public transport monthly. If this rule is approved, it would improve the financial situation of individuals who come from low-income families or have financial burdens.

On the other hand, I agree with the viewpoint that public transport must not be free at all, but at least a small fee should be charged in order to operate properly. That is, public transport uses the money for paying its employees, ensuring its technical safety, and maintaining comfort. Otherwise, this would take its toll on the government, causing a financial burden, and it, accordingly, would have to increase taxes to cover the costs, which would make residents pay for public transport through paying taxes. Furthermore, I feel that the government would have to reduce its investments in other sectors—healthcare, education, and business—to cover the costs of free public transport, which, in turn, lowers the progress in other fields.

In conclusion, it seems to me that while free public transport offers some positive changes in people’s lives, it has many drawbacks: financial burdens on the government; weakening the progress in education, healthcare, and business; and others.
