The role of universities has always been a topic of discussion. While some people argue that higher education should focus mainly on academic subjects, others believe that students also need practical skills such as communication and teamwork. In this blog post, I will discuss both sides of the argument and share my own opinion.

On the one hand, universities have traditionally been centres of academic knowledge. Supporters of this view believe that the main purpose of higher education is to deepen students’ understanding of their chosen field. Subjects like science, mathematics, and literature require advanced theoretical study, which can only be delivered through academic courses. They argue that without a strong academic foundation, students may struggle to progress in their future professions or pursue further research.

On the other hand, many people believe that practical skills are equally important. Today’s workplaces demand employees who can collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, and adapt to new situations. Even students with excellent academic results may face difficulties if they lack these essential abilities. Teaching teamwork through group projects or improving communication through presentations can help prepare students for real-life challenges. For this reason, many employers prefer graduates who have both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

In my view, universities should combine both approaches. Academic subjects are necessary for building deep knowledge, but practical skills are essential for applying that knowledge in real situations. When universities offer a balanced programme, students become more confident, capable, and ready for the modern job market. A blended model not only supports academic excellence but also helps young people succeed beyond the classroom.

In conclusion, although some people prioritise academic subjects, practical skills should not be ignored. A university education that includes both theory and real-world skills will better equip students for their future careers and personal development.
