High school years are one of the most important and life changing years in every student’s life, because during those years students decide on their future university, and prepare their documents and transcripts to apply for that university. However, community services are also a part of the students portfolio, so they are significant too. There are some individuals, who claim that, obligatory unpaid voluntary work such as, charity activities or improving neighborhood, have to be established. In my way of thinking, this establishment is very practical, if students’ academic excellence is very good.
To begin with, this addition might be wrong, because of the fact that students go to school to study and academics are very important while beginning further education. In addition, free community services, might be difficult and time consuming and students instead could spend their time on researches or their hobbies, which is beneficial for their health and future life. For instance, if one student is doing 8 hours of voluntary work per week, it will take 32 hours a month, such a student could allocate that time to studies and entertainment, instead of doing some much work for free.
On the other hand, making free volunteering mandatory is a very good idea. The particular reason for the circumstance is that, most further education institutions select applicants, based on their non-academic activities too. For example, student who got band 9 in TELTS and 1580 in SAT has lower possibility of being admitted by a particular institute. compared to the one who has IELTS band 8, SAT 1500, moderate work experience and some volunteering activities done. Since top ranked universities emphasize mostly on students social background and find those who have done good job in extracurricular activities the most competitive. Additionally, community services also improve soft skills that are paramount for the persons* independent life.
To conclude. I agree that establishing compulsory unpaid volunteering is necessary, only if student is doing great in studies, as the main aim of schools is transmitting knowledge Nevertheless, the situation might change in the future and academic excellence might become even more vital.
