Band 5+: Some people believe that unpaid community service should be compulsory in high school programmes (for example, working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children). Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, there is a popular belief that unpaid community service should be mandatory for high scholars. Evidence of this is the enforcement of students into developing neighborhoods around or involving them in the education process. I partly disagree with this statement since it takes over younger generations’ right of choice.

There is no doubt that community service is a valuable experience which accustoms young people to empathy and compassion. However, when individuals are forced to work on behalf of their school and not of their own intentions it is not so efficient as planned. Evidence of this is proven by an experiment where the second group, which was obliged to take participation, showed incredibly low results.

Moreover, compulsory community service devalue the achievements of those who are actually engaged in voluntary work. Meanwhile, the development of the neighborhood is slowing down because teenagers are unable to provide high quality help for society. For example, the school was not satisfied with the quality of work done by students, so it was necessary to use the help of professionals like painters and janitor.

In conclusion, even tho mandatory community service is an appealing idea in theory, in reality it is not easy to achieve.
