Band 8+: Some people believe that visitors to other countries should follow local customs and behaviour. Others disagree and think that the host country should welcome cultural differences. Discuss both these views and give your own opionion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The question of whether tourists should conform to local customs and behaviors or whether host countries should embrace cultural diversity has become increasingly controversial in today’s globalized world. While visitors should respect local laws and important social norms, I believe that host countries should be welcoming of different cultures.

On the one hand, advocates of this view contend that tourists should observe local customs and social norms while visiting foreign countries. This is because every society has its own traditions, values, and standards of behavior, and failing to respect them may cause misunderstandings or even offend local residents. By following local traditions, visitors can interact more successfully with local residents and gain a deeper understanding of the host culture.

On the other hand, many people argue that host countries should be more accepting of cultural differences. In today’s globalized world, cultural diversity is both inevitable and beneficial. Since visitors come from different countries and cultural backgrounds, expecting them to fully adapt to local customs is unrealistic. Furthermore, welcoming people from different cultural backgrounds can bring significant economic benefits to host countries. International tourists contribute to the local economy by spending money on accommodation, transportation, food, and entertainment. Consequently, I believe that cultural diversity not only boosts the economies of destination countries but also strengthens international relations.

In conclusion, although respecting local customs is important, host countries should adopt a tolerant attitude towards cultural diversity, provided that visitors obey local laws and demonstrate respect for the local community.
