Some people argue that television has a harmful effect on children’s development, while others believe it can be educational and beneficial. In my opinion, watching TV can have a positive influence on children, provided that parents control both the content and the amount of time spent in front of the screen.
Many parents are concerned that television negatively affects their children’s health and behaviour. Spending long hours watching TV can lead to eye strain and a lack of physical activity, which may cause obesity. Moreover, certain movies or cartoons display violence or inappropriate behaviour that children may imitate. For example, young viewers sometimes copy aggressive characters from action films, not realizing that such behaviour is unacceptable in real life. However, these problems often occur when parents do not supervise what their children watch.
On the other hand, television can be extremely beneficial when used wisely. Educational programmes can help children develop language skills, creativity, and curiosity about the world. For instance, watching science shows or foreign language cartoons can inspire learning and improve vocabulary. In addition, many TV characters promote positive values such as kindness, honesty, and teamwork. As long as parents choose suitable content and limit screen time, television can become a valuable educational tool rather than a harmful distraction.
In conclusion, watching TV does involve certain risks, especially when there is no parental control. Nevertheless, if used properly, it can greatly contribute to children’s intellectual and emotional development by exposing them to new ideas and positive role models.
