In school, we are often taught that diligence and strong will to strive for a goal are the keys reasons for success. While this belief is largely true, I do believe that there are other factors, both internal and external, that comes into play when it comes to being successful in life.
Admittedly, one’s ability to persevere through obstacles is crucial in their journey to success. To achieve a goal or to excel in a certain industry, one has to put in tremendous work in order to learn and master the specific skills or knowledge in said field. Nobel Laureates spend years researching a niche topic but they also often face numerous setbacks and rejections. It is their unwavering determination that allows them to overcome these challenges and ultimately achieve breakthroughs. This demonstrates that without having a clear goal and the determination to push through difficulties along the journey, even those with high potential would not be successful
However, the view that anyone can become successful with hard work and determination can be rather simplistic and incomplete. This argument fails to consider the innate ability one possesses, which varies among individuals. Take IQ and EQ, two common measures of innate intelligence, as examples. Those with higher IQ and EQ are often described as having more ease picking up new concepts, or developing relationships with strangers in social settings. Thus, when pursuing a goal, it is likely that those with better inborn skills and intelligence would be required to put in less efforts to see fruition. Moreover, external factors such as wealth and connections are also huge contributors to success. Those from affluent families often have access to better educational resources, such as private tutoring and prestigious universities. This gives them a significant advantage in developing the skills and knowledge necessary for success in competitive fields. Furthermore, their family’s wealth can provide them with the financial security and industry connections to take risks and pursue entrepreneurial ventures.
In conclusion, some attribute success to perseverance and diligence, while others cite the importance of innate ability and wealth. Success, I believe, is ultimately a combination of these elements.
