Band 5+: Some people believe that young people who commit serious crimes should be punished in the same way as adults. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people opine that the punishment for the young generation should be the same as the adults while they commit the same serious crime. As far as I am concerned, I totally disagree with this opinion. Firstly, it is highly unlikely that they are aware of its consequences completely. Moreover, they are too young to waste their precious time at courts and jails instead of being in school.

Human beings in any ages might do a crime which is harsh , but for the teenagers, it might be happen due to misunderstanding or lack of knowledge about its results. Therefore, it would be unfair if we punish them according to the rules and regulations which are related to people who break the laws on purpose by knowing its outcomes. A survey, which was conducted one month ago in Iran is a good example. It proved that 70% of the criminals under the age of 17 did not expect such a disaster to happen before they had done it.

Furthermore, sentencing young people means dragging them away from study and school, where they might make a healthy relation and learn something which would change their future. Being in school is claimed to have affected them positively and widened their horizon. For example, in an article, which was published in Tehran University, 50% of the teenagers who had been imprisoned for less than a year, would have liked to continue their study and take back to school, because they were believed that this was the only way to build a healthy life.

To conclude, I strongly think the opposite of those believing in punishing the young generation who admit a crime based on the general laws for adults. What this act does is to make a remarkable gap between them and studying , as well as ruin their relations with their friends that would improve their cognitive ability. Apart from that, committing a crime by this age might be done due to misconception, and a harsh punishment means poor judgment.
