It is evident that a rich variety of music styles is prevalent around the modernized world. While music closes the gaps between different ages and fosters cultural ties in some certain ways, from my perspective, it also has some potential limitations to fully recognize as a well-functioning form.
On the one hand, it is more likely to acknowledge the merits of music in promoting an intercultural world. Internet development accompanies the boom of digital music platforms, leading to the international access of music lovers. Therefore, people can delight in music products and programs that come from various countries such as Korea or the US through Youtube or Sportify. As a result, music fans have opportunities to discover cultures and customs of their favorite singers. On the socioeconomic level, music concerts are an essential means of cultural exchanges organised by governments to advertise their nation’s culture and enhance the exploration of other countries. In addition, both the elderly and young generations share their interest in classical and revolutionary music, which enriches their patriotism, and in turn, encourages them to sacrifice and contribute to the development of their native countries.
Nevertheless, there are still some hurdles to the full contribution of music to bring people of different cultures and ages together. The first rationale is that listening to music on digital platforms is inadequate for foreign listeners to immerse in different cultures. For example, it is difficult to find the presence of Vietnamese traditional music genres such as “don ca tai tu” or “hat xoan” widely in music apps so foreign music lovers cannot enjoy the true merits of traditional types. Finally, modern international music genres may not be suitable for all ages, especially the elderly. It can be explained that pop music is a crucial commercial product that is marketed and sold by business people so it is usually designed to have a catchy and fun rhythm. The lack of meaningful lyrics which is regarded by the older generations as the most important factor drives to their dissatisfaction.
In conclusion, while people can connect and discover new cultures, regardless of their ages or geographical location, thanks to the power of music, I believe that music producers should regulate their kinds of music to enhance traditional factors and deep-meaning lyrics to maximise music’s benefits.
