A school of thought holds that children’s maturation is formed by the benefits of outdoor activities rather than computer games. While acknowledging the reasons for this proposal, I would argue that it would not be true in some other cases.
On the one hand, it is justifiable for someone to advocate that children should participate in more outdoor activities. The primary reason for this outdoor pursuits can greatly enhance adolescence’s physical and mental health, thereby improving their study progress. Activities like running and stretching improve cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles, and help in building stamina, all of which are crucial during a child’s growth. Additionally, participating in sport games provides young individuals potential opportunities to connect with others, leading them to stay optimistic and enhancing communication skills. For instance, schools in Britain often host physical education competitions to incentives students to participate and build leadership and cooperation skills as students engage in group exercises and develop teamwork capabilities. Such experiences are crucial in helping children develop problem-solving skills and overcome communication difficulties.
Despite the aforementioned benefits, I am convinced that computer games contribute significantly to children cognitive abilities by offering certain challenges that outdoor experience cannot replicate. Games often present dynamic tasks that require players to adapt strategies in real-time and understand complex systems, unlike outdoor activities that tend to involve repetitive actions. This improves critical thinking and the ability to solve problems under pressure. For instance, StarCraft requires players to analyze and adjust strategies quickly, a skill less emphasized in outdoor activities. Additionally, games teach children resilience through failure, as they progress by learning from mistakes, which contrasts with the binary outcomes of outdoor competitions. In Elden Ring, for example, players must fail repeatedly to learn enemy patterns and refine their strategies, fostering perseverance and continuous improvement.
To summarize, while there are justifications for supporting the idea that outdoor activities have clear developmental benefits, I would contend thatcomputer games offer unique cognitive advantages. By fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and resilience through dynamic challenges, games play a key role in children’s intellectual development. Therefore, a balanced approach that includes both outdoor activities and gaming may best support children’s overall growth.
