Band 6+: Some people say that there is too much harmful content on the internet. They say the only way to make the internet safe is for the government to censor the content of websites. To what extent do you think the government should control what information is available on the internet?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

These days the Internet has become an essential part of people’s everyday lives, being used not only for working, but also for the spreading detrimental information. That is why some people claim that it should be partly banned by officials to make it safer for users. I mostly agree with this statement, however there should be a balance, as the Internet provides many benefits, such as wider range for business or communication.

On the one hand, the Internet gives a plethora of opportunities for the population in many spheares of their lives. Nowadays, a majority of people use it on a daily basis for networking through various social networks as Twitter or Facebook. It greatly assists in finding like-minded people or new friends around the world. For example, people from different subcultures would be rejected in real life by their mates and relatives, if there was not the access to express yourself online. Moreover, the Internet is considered to be a useful source for making the living, due to easily promoting systems on Instagram or Facebook. Thus, the Internet enables people to develop their projects and business easier and faster.

However, the Internet is still being a double-edged sword. Ubiquitously promoting betting websites might be a prime example in this issue. Numerous pop-adds of cazino are shown everywhere, starting with various streaming platforms, ending with an advertisement in Youtube videos. It leads to a huge risk for many people in many countries, not to mention weak mental condition of children, who can be easily affected by such advertising methods. Furthermore, there is an upward trend in online frauding during last years. Being very naive and gullible, many older people, have already become the victims of the online cheating, due to the low level of the Internt awareness among them.

Overall, in my personal opinion, irrespective of some advantages, there are much more reasons for setting up the online censorship, such as advertisment of betting companies and cazino or frauds.
