Nowadays, many people argue that the Internet provides an opportunity for people to be closer together, while others believe that people and communities are becoming more isolated. In this essay I will discuss both viewpoints before expressing my own opinion, which favors that social media has a great effect of isolation on our lives.
On the one hand, the Internet has a significant impact on people’s lives. It offers a chance to connect people across long distances. For instance, individuals can stay in touch with their relatives and friends residing overseas and maintain their connection. Furthermore, social media is a good way to chat with friends, stay informed about special events and share happiness. As a result, everyday connections have brought people closer together.
On the other hand, some people argue that the Internet is the main cause of their increasing isolation. As a result, people become addicted to the Internet and social media, which reduces the quality of our lives. This problem is more prevalent among the younger generation. For example, instead of choosing face to face conversations, teenagers prefer virtual dialogues. They scroll social media in their free time, instead of using their time more effectively, such as doing sports, spending time with family, and developing their skills. Moreover, some people idealize what they see on the Internet and build templates for themselves and for others. This impacts living standards and sometimes people begin to prioritize trends over more meaningful aspects of life.
To sum up, the Internet is very beneficial and a meaningful tool in our times, yet individuals often abuse this tool excessively. As a result, isolation is increasing among people and communities, which diminishes life quality and encourages a superficial lifestyle.
