Band 8+: Some people think that a person improves intellectual skills better when doing group activities. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The debate surrounding the topic of conditions for better development of intellectual skills is gaining interest. While some people assert that group activities have more potential to advance a person’s brainpower, others consider that studying alone is a more practical approach to achieving intellectual growth. However, I agree with the latter notion.

Despite the fact that working in groups provokes the development of communication skills and expansion of worldview, individual study is superior for the advancement of self-discipline and focus, which make a better contribution to the improvement of intellectual skills. Doing group activities involves certain problems, such as scheduling conflicts and controversies about ideas, that are not encountered in individual studying. Studying alone is flexible and gives the opportunity to manage time by one’s own decisions. To be more precise, freedom in scheduling leads to more efficient results and better mental health.

Another reason why individual study is a convenient form for making an upgrade in intellectual skills is the focus. Studying alone minimizes external distractions and obstacles, enabling full concentration on the given topic. Deep focus on the material, without interruptions from group discussions and socializing, ensures better understanding. For instance, in most cases, work is divided into parts while studying in groups, which might lead to poor comprehension of all aspects of the project. Also, it is a fact that people in a group are often distracted by irrelevant themes during the work.

In conclusion, in spite of the fact that working in groups can contribute to the advancement of brainpower, individual studying is a more practical approach to developing intellectual skills because of independent schedules and better concentration.
