Band 7+: Some people think that competitive sports have a positive effect on the education of teenagers while others argue that the effect is negative. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

According to some individuals, competitive games positively influence children’s development; whereas, there is an opinion about their potential negative effect. I think both groups have a grain of truth, as although team games contribute to developing collaboration skills, they provoke outbursts of aggression.

On the one hand, a common pursuit for victory makes kids unite and come up with creative ideas to defeat opponents. In other words, it teaches them to take a responsibility not only for themselves but for others, and demonstrates that sometimes it is important to forget about personal attitudes to achieve a desired result. At the moment, the ability and readiness to cooperate are essential for any employee because they represent the driving force of the working process. Luckily, these skills may be mastered at an early age in the form of games in physical education lessons where pupils take decisions, reminding those they will have to come to later at work.

On the other hand, a sense of rivalry makes people overwhelmed with destructive emotions. In terms of science, it is anger that enables us to leave competitors behind, and it may extend to daily life. Nowadays, many adults are worried about the high level of cruelty among teenagers, so all fear about additional harmful impact of competitive games are not unfounded.

Finally, in my opinion, it is wrong to blame physical activities for teenagers’ behavior. Take for example aggressive grown-ups around them, adolescents are likely to act in the same way because of them, but not football. Consequently, people should cope with the real reason for child cruelty but see a culprit in plays.

In conclusion, sports possess good and bad sides, like everything in the world. Possible advantages of competitions, such as teamwork skills, outweigh disadvantages that may be tackled.
