In today’s world, personal image is as important as ever. Therefore, it is understandable why some people advocate for a smart dress code in the workplace. However, there is an opposing view that prioritises job performance over appearance, and I personally support this perspective.
On the one hand, wearing formal attire can certainly be beneficial in certain professions. Many roles involve public interactions, where professionals must appear credible. Dressing smartly can help enhance this credibility. For instance, teachers are often viewed as role models by their students and are thus responsible for setting certain standards. Additionally, some individuals, particularly those from older generations, maintain conservative beliefs and still form judgments based on appearance. In their view, a suit symbolises diligence, confidence, and authority, making someone appear more persuasive. Therefore, formal attire does play a significant role in certain contexts.
On the other hand, I believe there should be greater tolerance for employees when it comes to dress codes. As society becomes more modern, we must adapt to changing values. The younger generation, in particular, tends to value freedom and comfort, with individualism becoming increasingly common. Allowing people, especially young professionals, to focus more on their work rather than their appearance could lead to improved productivity and job satisfaction. Furthermore, if employees deliver exceptional work, even those with conservative mindsets are likely to place less importance on appearance. This is why placing a higher value on the quality of work rather than on attire is essential.
In conclusion, I believe we should move away from traditional views of formal attire and embrace more relaxed styles, allowing employees to express their personalities through their clothing, as long as their performance remains high.
