Band 6+: Some people think that government should decide which subject should students’ study at the University while others believe that students should be allowed to apply for subjects they prefer. Discuss both views.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the contemporary era, more individuals believe that governance should dictate the subjects pupils can study, while others argue that pupils should have the autonomy to choose their own areas of study. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the given arguments before I reach a appropriate conclusion.

On one hand, if the governance will choose the subjects, it would naturally be taking into account the job sector. There would be less unemployment as the government knows which sector has job vacancies and would suggest only those subjects. Thus, many pupils will study only governance-preferred subjects. As a result, due to huge competition, qualified pupils are without jobs, while unqualified pupils have access to many job vacancies. For example, a government job has a lot of facilities, so most people are interested in choosing government sector vacancies rather than private jobs.

On the other hand, if the pupils will dictate the subjects, they will perform well because of their interest. Therefore, pupils can explore a lot of fields in education, then there will be more graduated students. For instance, if students are forced to study in an uninterested field, it leads to failure, stress, dropouts, and suicidal thoughts. Consequently, it is the responsibility of the pupils to make their own decisions about their subjects because they know their whole future rests on that decision.

According to my opinion, taking everything into account, I believe that it is preferable for pupils to select their subjects in the university themselves. The government can play a role in promoting some subjects by providing funding to those who take up those subjects.

In conclusion, considering the above-mentioned points, it would be better to leave the choice to students to select their subjects, as there would be fewer drop-outs and they would excel in their field.
