Band 6+: Some people think that government should decide which subject should students’ study at the University while others believe that students should be allowed to apply for subjects they prefer. Discuss both views.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is no doubt that government plays a paramount role in shaping the life and career of a student. However, it is a highly debated viewpoint on whether government should direct students to study a certain subject at the university or should the students choose the subject they feel comfortable with.

It can be argued that government should dictate the study subject of a student as government knows best which sector faces shortages of labor and in order to generate qualified professionals for that sector the government can direct students to study subjects related to that sector. For example; Government can allot adequate university slots for sectors facing deficit in their workforce whereas lowering slots for those sectors that possess abundant workforce. This will create balance and adequate competition in the labor market.

On the contrary, there is also a strong viewpoint that students must be able to select the subject that they are passionate about and provides them with self-motivation. This self-motivation drives the student to perform exceptionally as they invest more of their time, effort and resources in their studies. For example; When a student gets to learn the subject of their own choice, they can link their education and align their careers with it by converting their weaknesses to strengths.

In conclusion, even though both arguments have their own different kind of advantages, I personally believe that government must allow the students to choose the subjects that they are passionate about because this helps the students to develop themselves in a natural way.
